The Politics of Hanjin
Politics has always been a tricky business. Many people would claim connections with the powers that be and pretend influence when they have is none.
The controversy surrounding Hanjin Heavy Equipment and Construction Corporation, Hanjin for short, is a classic example. Along the corridors of failures and success involving Hanjin is a long trail of truthful persons and pretenders of peddlers of influence.
Provincial Governor Oscar Moreno of Misamis Oriental has been appointed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as head of what is called Task Force Hanjin.
This is supposed to be the institution tasked with overseeing the intention to ensure that Hanjin will continue with their investment of 2 billion dollars in the shipbuilding project at Phividec, Misamis Oriental.
This is a long task that is close to impossible to achieve.
The reason is obvious. Many factors contribute to the failure of Hanjin and foremost of all is politics. There are allegations that Mayor Paulino Emano of Tagoloan Town and Mayor Juliet Uy of Villanueva Town are trying to derail the Hanjin project. I personally know that this is not true. Both Mayors are doing there best to make the Hanjin project succeed.
Nevertheless, Governor Oscar Moreno of Misamis Oriental assured the people of his province that before the end of May 2008, Hanjin will resume their project.
Notwithstanding the negative publicity or the false claims of the detractors of the Hanjin project, the people of Misamis Oriental will get the benefits of this rare huge investment.
Whatever be the squabbling between Governor JJ Romualdo, Congressman Pedro Romualdo of Camiguin and Mayor Oloy Emano of Tagoloan, nothing should not get in the way of the Hanjin return so that the benefit that 45,000 workers will obtain from employment in the.
The politics of Hanjin will transcend the economic benefits that would redound to the people of Mindanao and the businesses that would be mostly benefited by the Hanjin project. In the end, the politics besetting Hanjin is only temporary and passing like the enmity between Barak Obama and Hillary Clinton. It is only purely politics. But when the economic, social and historical benefit of the entire Hanjin project will be brought forth, I am sure that the conscience of each of the politicians will be overran by the overwhelming economic benefits that the project will bring.
Whatever is the end result, Hanjin will usher in unimaginable benefits and opportunities that no other company could provide. Thus, each one of us should contribute in whatever way we could to eliminate whatever stumbling blocks there may be that would prevent the return of Hanjin.
Let’s set aside political squabbles and cooperate to make sure that what has been caught and in the bag will not slip away.
